Placeholder Image Generator

Generate a solid-color placeholder image at any size, ready to download.

About this tool

Generate a solid-color placeholder image at any exact size — useful for mocking up a layout, filling a design template before real images are ready, or testing how a page handles image dimensions before final assets exist.

Why an exact-size placeholder matters. A layout that "will have an image there eventually" behaves very differently depending on that image's actual dimensions — a 1200×400 banner reflows a page completely differently from a 400×400 square. Generating a placeholder at the real target size lets you check spacing, responsive breakpoints, and text wrapping around it before the final asset exists, rather than guessing with a random stock photo of the wrong aspect ratio.

What's on the image. By default the label is the image's own dimensions (e.g. "800 × 450"), following the convention long used by classic placeholder-image services (like the now-retired placehold.it) — instantly telling anyone looking at the mockup exactly what size that slot is meant to be. Enter custom text instead if you'd rather label it "Hero image" or "Product photo #3."

Choosing colors. The background and text color pickers let you approximate your real design's palette (a muted gray-blue is the classic "placeholder" look, but any pair works) or use a bright, obviously-fake color combination specifically so nobody mistakes the placeholder for a finished asset in a shared preview.

Common uses: filling image slots in a CMS or page builder while waiting on real photography, populating a design mockup or wireframe, generating consistent-looking test data for a gallery or product-grid layout, and checking a responsive image component's behavior at specific dimensions (very wide, very tall, perfectly square) before wiring it to a real image source.

Once you have real photos to drop in, the image resizer and image compressor get them to the same target dimensions and a reasonable file size. To lay out several images together instead of one placeholder, see the contact sheet maker.

Frequently asked questions

What shows up if I leave the label blank?
The image dimensions are shown automatically (like "800 × 450"), matching the classic placeholder-image convention used by most placeholder image services.
Is there a maximum size?
Up to 4000px per side here, which comfortably covers typical web and print mockup needs without generating an unreasonably large file.
Can I use a transparent background?
Not currently — this generates a flat solid-color background. For a transparent placeholder, a blank PNG with no fill would serve the same layout purpose.
Why generate this instead of using an online placeholder-image URL service?
A URL-based service needs a live network request every time the page loads and depends on that third-party service staying online — this downloads one real file you control, with no ongoing dependency, and never sends anything about your project to another server.
What file format is downloaded?
PNG — a lossless format, which is appropriate here since a solid-color image with text has no benefit from JPEG-style photographic compression.
Can I match my exact brand colors?
Yes — both color pickers accept any hex value, so paste your brand's exact background and text colors instead of using the defaults.
