About this tool

How it's worked out. The tip is the bill times the percentage; the total is bill plus tip; the per-person figure is the total divided by the number of people. A 15% tip on an $86.40 bill is $12.96, for a total of $99.36 — split three ways, that's $33.12 each.

Tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount? Both are common. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the stricter reading, but many people tip on the total shown on the check because it's the number in front of them. On a bill with 8% tax the difference is small — roughly a percent of the tip. If you want to be precise, enter the pre-tax subtotal as the bill.

Quick mental version. Find 10% by moving the decimal one place (that $86.40 bill → $8.64), then halve it for 5% ($4.32). 15% is the two added ($12.96); 20% is 10% doubled ($17.28). Rounding the total up to a whole number is a normal way to leave a little extra and make the split clean.

Customs vary widely. In the US, 15–20% is typical for table service and less for counter service. Many countries in Europe and Asia either include service in the price or expect only small rounding. There's no universal right number — the percentage buttons here are a convenience, not a rule.

What tip percentage is standard?

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Either is accepted. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the stricter approach; tipping on the check total is common and only slightly higher. Enter the subtotal as the bill if you want the pre-tax figure.

How is the split calculated?

The total (bill plus tip) is divided evenly by the number of people. It doesn't account for people ordering different amounts — use the bill splitter for that.

What if I enter 0 people?

The split is treated as a minimum of one person, since dividing by zero isn't meaningful.

Does it round the per-person amount?

Figures are shown to the cent. Rounding the total up to a clean number before splitting is a common way to cover the remainder.

Can I tip a flat amount instead of a percentage?

This tool works in percentages. For a flat tip, divide the amount you want to give by the bill to get the equivalent percentage, or just add it to the bill mentally.
