Paste any block of text to see which words or phrases appear most often, ranked by frequency — useful for spotting overused words in your writing, getting a quick sense of an article's focus, or basic keyword analysis.
Switch output type to change what's counted: Words ranks individual words; Bigrams and Trigrams rank two- and three-word phrases, which surface recurring turns of phrase a single-word count misses; Common flips the usual filter around and shows which filler words (the, and, a…) you lean on most, handy for trimming a wordy draft. Frequently asked questions
- What counts as "common words"?
- A standard list of frequent English function words — articles, pronouns, and conjunctions like "the," "and," "is," and "of" — that usually aren't meaningful on their own. Turning this off shows the raw count of every word, including those.
- What's the difference between Bigrams and Trigrams?
- Bigrams are two-word phrases (like "climate change"); trigrams are three-word phrases (like "in the meantime"). Both are built from overlapping windows across the text, so "the quick brown fox" produces bigrams "the quick," "quick brown," and "brown fox."
- How is "Common" different from the "Ignore common words" checkbox?
- The checkbox removes filler words from the Words/Bigrams/Trigrams results. The Common output type does the opposite — it shows only the filler words themselves, ranked by how often each appears, so you can see at a glance which ones you overuse.
- Is this case-sensitive?
- No — "The" and "the" are counted together as the same word, since capitalization at the start of a sentence shouldn't split word counts artificially.
- How are words separated?
- By whitespace and punctuation — so "well-known" and "don't" are handled sensibly, and trailing punctuation like commas or periods doesn't get counted as part of the word.
- Does "Export CSV" include everything, or just the bars shown on screen?
- The full ranked list for the current output type and filter setting, not just the top 20 displayed. "Copy list" copies the same full list as plain text, ready to paste into a spreadsheet.
