Syllables are counted with a standard vowel-group heuristic rather than a full dictionary lookup, so the score is a close estimate rather than an exact measurement — treat it as a general guide.
Frequently asked questions
- What do the score ranges mean?
- 90–100 is very easy (roughly 5th-grade level), 60–70 is considered plain, everyday writing, 30–50 is fairly difficult (college level), and below 30 is very difficult, typical of dense academic or legal text.
- Why does sentence length matter so much?
- Long sentences with many clauses are harder to parse and hold in working memory, so the formula weights average sentence length heavily alongside syllable complexity.
- Is the syllable count exact?
- It's a heuristic based on counting vowel groups per word, which is accurate for the vast majority of English words but can be off by one for some irregular spellings.
