PDF Bookmark / TOC Generator
Add a table of contents (bookmarks) to a PDF.
About this tool
Adds a table of contents (bookmarks/outline) to a PDF — the panel most PDF readers show for one-click navigation to a chapter or section — by pairing a page number with a title for each entry. Runs entirely in your browser using pdf-lib; your file is never uploaded anywhere.
The bookmark list (page numbers and titles) autosaves to this browser as you edit — it's restored automatically the next time you select a PDF here. "Export JSON" saves just the list as a file you can re-import later, handy for reusing the same table of contents across a document's revisions.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I create nested/indented bookmarks (sub-chapters)?
- Not in this version — every bookmark is added as a flat, top-level entry in the order you list them. Most PDF readers still let you jump straight to any of them from the bookmarks panel.
- Does this replace bookmarks the PDF might already have?
- Yes — if the file already has an outline, it's replaced by the one you build here rather than merged with it.
- Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
- No — everything happens entirely in your browser. Only the bookmark list itself (page numbers and titles, not the PDF) is saved to this browser's local storage for autosave.
