Why does my browser ask for microphone permission?

Reading microphone input requires explicit permission for privacy reasons — this site only uses it to draw the live level meter while the test is running, and stops accessing the microphone the moment you click Stop or leave the page.

The meter isn't moving at all — what's wrong?

Make sure you selected the correct input device from the dropdown (some computers have multiple microphones), check that it isn't muted at the OS level, and confirm no other app is currently using it exclusively.

Why can't I hear myself through my speakers during the test?

That's intentional — the microphone signal is analyzed for the meter but is never routed to your speakers, so there's no feedback loop or echo while testing.

What does the waveform chart show?

A live line trace of the raw audio signal, redrawn continuously — a flat line means silence, and the line's height and shape track your voice's volume and pitch in real time, the same idea as an oscilloscope.
