About this tool
Find exactly how many days fall between two dates, with a weeks-and-months breakdown alongside. Useful for deadlines, notice periods, contract terms, visa limits, project timelines, or settling how long ago something happened.
Inclusive vs. exclusive counting. This is the detail that trips people up. By default the tool counts the gap between the dates: Monday to Friday is 4 days. Tick "Include both dates" and it counts both endpoints as part of the span: Monday to Friday becomes 5 days — the length of the working week. Which one you want depends on the wording. "Within 30 days of purchase" is usually exclusive of the purchase day; "a 7-night stay" counts nights, not days.
How it's calculated. Both dates are treated as plain calendar dates. The tool works out the difference in whole days directly from the calendar, so daylight-saving changes and time zones never affect the result. The order doesn't matter — swap the dates and you get the same positive number.
The weeks and months figures. Weeks is simply the day total divided by 7. Months is an approximation, because months are 28–31 days long — the exact day count is always the number to rely on for anything precise, like a legal deadline.
Worked example. From 1 March 2025 to 1 June 2025 is 92 days exclusive (31 + 30 + 31), which is 13 weeks and 1 day, or about 3 months. Include both dates and it's 93.
Leap years are handled automatically. Any span that crosses 29 February picks up the extra day because the calculation walks the real calendar rather than assuming 365-day years.
To count only working days and skip weekends, use the workdays calculator. To add or subtract a number of days, weeks, or months from a date, use the date calculator. For an age from a birth date specifically, use the age calculator.
Frequently asked questions
- What does "include both dates" change?
- By default the calculation counts the gap between the two dates (exclusive). Turning it on adds one day, counting both the start and the end date as part of the span.
- Can the end date be before the start date?
- Yes. The result is a positive number of days either way — the tool uses the gap between the dates regardless of order.
- How is the months figure worked out?
- It's an approximation, since calendar months vary from 28 to 31 days. The total-days figure is always the exact one.
- Does it account for leap years?
- Yes. Any range spanning 29 February includes that day, because the count follows the actual calendar.
- Do time zones or daylight saving affect the result?
- No. The dates are handled as calendar dates with no time of day, so the day count is stable everywhere.
- Which setting should I use for a rental or hotel stay?
- Nights equal the exclusive count (check-in to check-out). A "5-night stay" is 5 days exclusive, 6 days inclusive.
